Dove oggi si trova Viale Marco Polo correva una strada di campagna che, partendo dall’attuale porta San Paolo, collegava l’Ostiense con l’Appia. Ai piedi della collina, verso Sud, probabilmente un deposito di creta e detriti arrivava sino al fiume Almone. Di qui il nome originale della strada: Vicolo del Cretaccio. Poi il nome cambiò in Vicolo della Travicella e poi nuovamente in Via della Travicella. Rimase però sempre una strada di campagna che attraversava terreni agricoli e poderi. Nel corso dei secoli, l’unico cambiamento notevole nell’area avvenne quando venne ristrutturato un tratto delle mura Aureliane, nel XVI secolo.
